Pirates Pull Off 61-58 Win at Whitman

WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Whitworth University women's basketball team overcame a fourth-quarter deficit to take the 61-58 road win over No. 6 Whitman in Friday's Northwest Conference women's basketball game.

Whitworth (3-3, 3-3 NWC) ends an eight-game losing streak to Whitman (5-2, 5-2), earning their first win over the Blues since Feb. 2, 2016.

The Pirates trailed by eight points entering the fourth quarter but outscored the Blues 24-13 in the final period, holding Whitman scoreless for a stretch of over four and a half minutes. The Pirates forced five turnovers and allowed only one shot attempt from the Blues in that span.

Whitworth trailed 45-37 after being outscored 18-6 in the third quarter. The Pirates tied the game at 49-49 with 03:22 to go after a basket from Talia Brandner. Keara Simpson's layup on the next Pirate possession put the Bucs up by two. Dorney followed with another layup to close a 9-0 Whitworth run and put the Pirates up 53-49 with 02:03 left. The Blues struggled to make shots in the final period to help the Pirates in the comeback win.

Whitworth and Whitman will battle again tomorrow at 3:30 p.m.
