SPOKANE, Wash. – A first half goal from Dominic Gusman lifted Whitworth to a 1-0 victory over visiting Pacific Lutheran in Sunday's Northwest Conference men's soccer match in the Whitworth Pine Bowl.
The victory gives Jeremy Payne his first win as Whitworth's head coach as the Pirates improve to 1-1 on the year. Pacific Lutheran drops to 1-1 after splitting the weekend series with Whitworth.
The Pirates took the lead early on when Gusman, a first-year player, found the back of net for his first collegiate goal after collecting a short pass from Jaime Rodriguez. The 16th-minute goal turned out to be the match-winner.
There were three yellow cards handed out in a span of 10 minutes in the first half. Whitworth went into halftime with a 7-4 shots advantage over PLU.
The second half saw three more yellow cards bringing the Lutes total to four and the Pirates to two on the game. Neither team attempted a shot on goal after the break, but the Lutes had a 4-3 edge in shots.
Whitworth goalkeeper Jamison Gunhus made two saves in the shutout. Nicholas Gaston totaled three saves for the Lutes.
The Pirates return to the Whitworth Pine Bowl next weekend for two games against Whitman.
