CLAREMONT, Wash. – Whitworth warmed up from three-point range and rolled to an 81-61 win over Pomona-Pitzer on Friday afternoon at the David Wells Classic.
The Pirates (2-3) won their second straight during a trip to California. The Bucs will conclude their three-game swing through the Golden State with a contest at Claremont-Mudd-Scripps on Saturday afternoon to conclude the Wells Classic.
Quincy McDeid opened the game with a three-pointer for Whitworth, setting a tone for the rest of the game. After Madison Quinn gave the Sagehens (2-3) a 6-5 lead, the Pirates responded with an 11-0 run and never trailed again. Megan Dorney scored three baskets during the decisive run.
Leading 26-14 after one quarter, Whitworth withstood a Pomona-Pitzer rally to within 32-27 on a jumper by Vanessa Hsia. Oliva Mayer answered with a three-pointer and the Sagehens never got closer. The Pirates scored the final seven points of the half, including a three-pointer by Taylor Smith and a short jumper by Talia Brandner in the final seconds to lead 42-29 at the break.
Macey Morales hit a three-pointer in the third to extend the margin to 51-33. Pomona-Pitzer outscored Whitworth 8-2 to get within 53-41 on a three-point play by Madison Quan. The Pirates responded with seven straight, including a three-pointer by Brandner, to go back up 60-41. The Bucs led 65-48 after three quarters.
Whitworth put the game completely out of reach when Smith hit her second three-pointer and Madison Hagen drilled another to give the Pirates their largest lead of the game at 79-52 midway through the final period.
Dorney led Whitworth with 16 points and seven rebounds. Mayer and Brandner came off the bench for 13 and 11 points, respectively. Morales led the Pirates with four assists off the bench. Whitworth made 46% (30-65) from the field, including a season-best 9-18 (50%) from three-point range. The Pirates outrebounded the Sagehens 48-33.
Quan scored 18 points to lead Pomona-Pitzer, while Maison Lee scored 15 off the bench.
