SPOKANE, Wash.—Whitworth played Montana Western evenly in the second and third quarters, but double-digit deficits in the second and fourth quarters were too much to overcome for the Pirates in a 67-45 loss.
The Bulldogs (3-1) jumped ahead 5-0, but the Pirates (0-2) went on a 5-0 run with three minutes left in the quarter to take a 14-12 lead. Talia Brandner hit a jumper to regain the lead again 16-14, but a Sydney Sheridan layup with three seconds left tied the game.
The Bulldogs started the second quarter off with a seven-point run led by Sheridan and Lilly Gopher. Whitworth's only two points of the quarter came on a Devyn Cope layup assisted by Megan Dorney. The Pirates made only 1-12 (8.3%) from the field in the quarter.
Whitworth scored seven of its 16 points in the third quarter on free throws. The Pirates closed the gap on a five-point run in the third quarter, bringing the deficit within ten, but could not get closer.
The Bulldogs shot 44.4% from the field and 40.0% from beyond the arc in the fourth quarter, and went on a 7-0 run near the end of the quarter to seal the game. Montana Western outscored Whitworth 23-11 in the final period.
Quincy McDeid led the Pirates with twelve points and four rebounds. Megan Dorney followed with nine points and six rebounds. Dorney was named to the all-tournament team.
Brynley Fitzgerald led the Bulldogs with 16 points, and received all-tournament honors as well. Jayden Winslow and Shainy Mack were both in double-digits in points as well.
Whitworth travels to Carroll, Montana on Fri, Nov. 19 to take on Carroll College at 5pm.
