Pirates Sweep Blues, Stay Unbeaten in NWC

SPOKANE, Wash.—Cassidy Franklin had nine kills to lead Whitworth to a 25-19, 25-20, 25-9 Northwest Conference volleyball win over visiting Whitman on Wednesday night.

The Pirates jump to 12-2 overall and remain perfect (7-0) in NWC play. Whitman falls to 4-12 and 2-5 in the NWC.

The teams traded errors in a first frame containing eight ties and two lead changes. Both teams committed a total of eighteen combined errors in the first set. The Pirates took advantage of some of those Whitman errors to go on a six-point run to take the lead 19-16. Whitworth sealed the deal with consecutive kills by Abby Wolverton.

Wolverton tallied two more kills in the second frame and hit .333 as the Pirates won a set with six ties and three lead changes. The Blues' Sophia Dominitz and Kenzie Martinez were blocking at the net early, but the Whitworth offense made adjustments and spread the ball around. Cassidy Franklin ended the set with four kills, Maddie Lee had three, and Logan Spencer tallied two. Whitman went on a five-point run late, capitalizing on two attack errors and two blocking errors. Lee and Kaity Barr rallied back with four blocks on four consecutive points to regain the lead and take the set.

Whitworth came out dominant in the third set, hitting a match-best .444. Franklin had three kills in the game on three attempts, coming out with a perfect 1.000 hitting average. Abigail Hudson also recorded three kills, and Wolverton added two more to her total. The Pirates also tallied six services aces in the third frame. Saylor Anderson had three, Joelle Forbes had one, and Kaitlyn White had two.

Kenzie Martinez led the Whitman offense with seven kills, and Emma Anderson followed close behind with five.

Franklin led the offense with nine kills and a .600 hitting percentage. Wolverton notched eight, and Lee tallied six in the victory.  Forbes dished 21 of the Pirates' 36 assists as Whitworth hit .276 in the match.

Whitworth has not lost to Whitman at home since Sept. 19, 2012.

The Pirates travel to Portland, Oregon to take on Lewis & Clark on Friday, Oct. 8 at 7pm.
