Whitworth Women Fall to UPS, 75-58

SPOKANE, Wash. – Jamie Lange finished with 16 points and 17 rebounds to lead the visiting Puget Sound Loggers to a 75-58 victory over the Whitworth Pirates in Saturday's Northwest Conference women's basketball game.

Puget Sound (7-4, 1-1 NWC) bounced back from a 60-51 loss to Whitman College yesterday to earn their first conference win. The win snapped Whitworth's (8-3, 1-1) five-game win streak. Cassidy Daugherty scored a game-high 19 points, including shooting 4-6 from beyond the arc.

Quincy McDeid led the Pirates with 15 points. Talia Brandner added 14 points, making two of the Pirates' three three-pointers. Sydney Abbott totaled 12 points to give the Bucs' three double-digit scorers.

Puget Sound led the entire game after opening on an 8-0 run. The Loggers held Whitworth to 3-13 from the field in the first to enter the second up 20-8.

The Bucs pulled within single digits after a free throw from Courtney Gray 40 seconds into the second period brought the score to 20-11. RaeAnn Allen made a three for the Loggers 20 seconds later to give them a double-digit lead for the rest of the game. Jordan Smith made the Pirates' first three-pointer with 07:31 remaining in the second. The Bucs had missed their previous five attempts from three-point range. Whitworth entered the break down 43-26.

Puget Sound shot 51.5% (17-33) from the field and 47.1% from beyond the arc over the first two quarters to enter the break with a 43-26 advantage. Whitworth shot 36% (9-25) from the floor and went one for eight from three-point range over the first two periods. The Lutes committed 12 fouls compared to the Pirates three in the first half.

The Loggers continued to build on their lead over the next two quarters. Daugherty sent in her fourth three of the game with 03:40 left in the third to give Puget Sound a 58-33 lead. Whitworth went on a 9-0 run over less than a minute to cut the deficit to 17-points (60-43) with 01:17 remaining in the third. Whitworth held Puget Sound to 11 points in the fourth quarter.

The Pirates shot 37.3% (19-51) from the floor, 17.6% (3-17) from three-point range and 60.7% (17-28) from the free throw line on the game. It was the Bucs' lowest percentage from beyond the arc of the season.

Puget Sound finished 49.2% (29-59) from the floor, 45.5% (10-22) from beyond the arc and made seven of 10 free throws. The Loggers outrebounded the Pirates 44-24.
