SANTA CRUZ, Calif. – Whitworth University picked up two more wins on Sunday to close out the UCSC Slugfest Volleyball Invitational with a 3-1 record.

The Pirates swept by Mills College 3-0 in record-setting fashion, then held off Northwest Conference rival Whitman College by a score of 3-1.

Whitworth felt little resistance from the Mills Cyclones (0-3) in the first match of the tournament on Sunday, winning 25-7, 25-6, 25-10.  The Pirates set a school record with a team hitting percentage of .647 in the sweep.  The Bucs finished with 37 kills and only four errors in 51 total attacks.  Sophomore Lauren Budde also tied a team record, posting a 1.000 hitting percentage by converting all 11 of her attacks into kills.  Cassandra Mendoza also had 11 kills while hitting .833.  Budde and Mendoza played only a set and a half each as Whitworth emptied the bench for the final half of the match.

The Pirates got a much stiffer test from Whitman (1-3) before finishing off the Missionaries 27-25, 18-25, 27-25, 25-20.  In fact, Whitman had a chance to win the match in a sweep as Whitworth had to fight off two set points each in the first and the third frames before pulling out wins in both.  Senior middle blocker Brenna Bruil led the Bucs with 18 kills.  Cassandra Mendoza had 14 and Emiko Kahler contributed 12 kills for the Pirates.  Erin White dished 39 assists as Whitworth hit .187 as a team.

The Pirates will return to action next Friday and Saturday at the Trinity University Fall Classic in San Antonio, Texas.  In addition to playing the host Tigers, Whitworth will take on Whittier (Calif.), Southwestern (Texas) and Mary Hardin-Baylor (Texas).
