by Brandon Loiler, Sports Information Assistant

SPOKANE, Wash. – Already having clinched the 2016 Northwest Conference title, the Whitworth men's soccer team celebrated Senior Day at the Whitworth Soccer Field with a 1-1 2OT match against Whitman.

Whitman (8-7-5, 4-5-5 NWC) managed to get off nine shots in the first half, while holding the Pirates to four. Whitworth (12-3-3, 10-1-3 NWC) countered Whitman's first half efforts, outshooting them five to two.  The Pirates finished the match with 10 shots (3 on goal) and Whitman totaled 16 shots (7 on target).

In just the second minute of play, Whitman's Ben Freedman acquired the ball near the edge of Whitworth's defensive third. He drove into the box and put a shot into the net to give Whitman an early 1-0 lead. In the 24th minute, Micah Weller was issued a yellow-card trying to disarm a Whitman attacking player. Near the end of the half, in the 39th minute, Jonah Snyder found his 15th goal of the season. Tyler Pangia drove into the box from the left side and played it to the feet of Snyder who turned and rocketed a shot in to the back of the net.

In the second half, Jonah Snyder was given a yellow-card in the 56th minute. Despite a well-taken chance by Eric Espinoza in the 89th minute, Whitman held on to force overtime.

In the first period of extra time, a Whitworth' foul 10 yards outside their own box set Gabe Jacobsen up for set piece in a dangerous area in the 99th minute. Jacobsen fired a shot into the wall of Whitworth defenders.

In the last 107th minute, Jacob Fritz collected a through ball in the middle of the box and rocketed a shot that was collected by Tony Watters to keep the game tied at 1-1.

Timmy Costa started in the goal for the Pirates and recorded two saves before being replaced by Tony Watters in the 30th minute. Watters finished out the match for the Pirates and had three saves. For Whitman, Jack Filliponi had one save and gave up one goal in the first half. Owen Davis-Bower played the remainder of the game, recording one save.

Tourney Bound: On Monday, Nov. 7, at 10:00 a.m., the Pirates will find out who they play and where in the First Round of the NCAA Div. III National Tournament.
