SPOKANE, Wash. – Alfredo Ornelas scored one goal late in the second half to tie the game and the golden goal to give Whitworth a 2-1 win over Northwest Conference opponent Pacific Lutheran in a men's soccer match on Saturday.
The Pirates (9-3-2, 7-1-2 NWC) totaled 19 shots, six on goal, while holding the Lutes (8-6-2, 5-4-1 NWC) to just eight shots (4 on target). Eric Espinoza and Alfredo Ornelas had four shots apiece.
PLU took a 1-0 lead in the 14th minute on Eddie Na's 11th goal of the season. KC Phillips sent a through ball from just past midfield leaving Na one-on-one with Whitworth goalkeeper Timmy Costa.
In typical Pirate fashion, Moi Diaz fired a shot in the 82nd minute that was saved by Jack Rose. The ball fell to the feet of Ornelas who finished to tie the game. Whitworth has scored the game-winning or game-tying goal in the last 15 minutes of regulation in seven out of 10 conference matches.
In the 97th minute, Eric Espinoza played a through ball to Austin Cassity who sent a hard cross over to Ornelas for the golden goal.
Timmy Costa improves to 6-2-2 after a three save performance for Whitworth. Jack Rose (5-2-1) recorded four saves and gave up two goals in his second loss of the season.
Next Up: The Pirates return to the Whitworth Soccer Field at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23 to face Puget Sound in another Northwest Conference match.
