FOREST GROVE, Ore. – The Whitworth men's soccer team tied Pacific (Ore.) 1-1 in a Northwest Conference contest on Sunday. The Boxers scored one goal in the first half to take a 1-0 lead in to halftime. The Pirates scored the lone goal of the second half to force overtime.
The Pirates (8-3-2, 6-1-2 NWC) had 14 total shots and eight on target, outshooting Pacific (Ore.) (6-5-3, 4-2-3 NWC) by three total shots and four shots on goal (11 Sh, 4 SOG). Whitworth forward Moi Diaz had four shots and two on target.
In the 32nd minute, Matt Kimball scored on a diving header off of a cross from Chris Abosamra. Austin Cassity evened the score from eight yards out in the 60th minute on a hard cross from Eric Espinoza to the middle of the box.
A physical match resulted in 26 fouls (15 WU, 11 PU) and five yellow cards. Kyle Cacoyannis and Moi Diaz received cards in the 42nd and 81st minute. Pacific's Shawn Opfer and Ronnie Bartenstein were issued cautions in the 51st minute and in the 71st minute, Woodey Greer was carded for holding a Whitworth attacking player.
The Whitworth defense gave up four shots on goal, three of which were handled by goalkeeper Timmy Costa (5-2-2). Leyton Thommason (6-5-3) gave up one goal and had seven saves.
Looking Ahead: The Pirates will come home to the Whitworth Soccer Field to play Pacific Lutheran and Puget Sound in a pair of Northwest Conference contests. The matches will be at 12:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 22 and 2:30 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 23.
