Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. – Behind Brenna Bruil's dominating performance in the middle, visiting Whitworth rolled to a three-set sweep at George Fox in Northwest Conference volleyball action on Friday night at the Wheeler Sports Center.
The first place Pirates (14-5 overall, 8-1 NWC) defeated the last place Bruins (3-13, 1-8) 25-20, 25-13, 25-19 to stay at least one game up on second place Puget Sound in the NWC standings.
Bruil finished with 11 kills on only 15 attempts without a single error for a hitting percentage of .733. She also added a pair of block assists.
Whitworth led the first set only 9-8 before a 6-1 run gave the Bucs some breathing room. Cassandra Mendoza had two kills and a block during the run. Mendoza ended the set with another kill.
The second set was all Pirates. Whitworth jumped out to leads of 12-2 and 17-3. Bruil had three kills and a block to get the Bucs out to a 5-1 lead. Madison Douglas ended the set in Whitworth's favor with a kill.
Whitworth broke away from an early 4-4 tie in the final stanza with a 6-1 run and would never trail again. GFU pulled within 17-13 before Emiko Kahler sparked a 4-1 run that gave the Bucs a seven-point margin. Cara Wonsley ended the match with a kill.
Kahler led Whitworth with 13 kills and hit .333. Erin White dished 35 assists while Taylor Wicht added 17 digs. Whitworth hit .252 as a team.
George Fox was limited to a 0.031 hitting percentage. Danyle Dupray led the Bruins with six kills.
Whitworth will continue its Oregon road trip with a contest at Pacific on Saturday night.
