SPOKANE, Wash. - Sam Engle scored less than three minutes into the match and Whitworth recorded its fourth consecutive shutout with a 1-0 victory over visiting Pacific Lutheran on Sunday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.

Entering Sunday's match, the Pirates and Lutes were the only teams in the Northwest Conference without a loss in the conference season. Eighth-ranked Whitworth remained undefeated for the year, improving to 8-0-0 overall and 4-0-0 in conference action. Pacific Lutheran had its four-match win streak snapped, falling to 6-3 overall and 3-1 in NWC play.

Engle gave the Pirates an early lead for the second day in a row with a goal in the 3rd minute. Aaron Yanagi sent a through-ball pass up to Engle in the right side of the 18-yard box and the senior forward finished to the lower-left side of the goal from roughly seven yards away past a diving goalkeeper.

Whitworth produced 14 shots in the match compared with 11 for the Lutes. Pacific Lutheran held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal. 

The Pirates threatened in the opening half but were only able to put one shot on goal in the form of Engle's goal. Whitworth had two shots on goal in the second half and a third shot hit the post in the final five minutes of the match. The Lutes put two shots on frame in each half.

Timmy Costa collected four saves for the Pirates while Mike Arguello made two saves for the Lutes.

The Pirates have conceded just two goals in 2015 and became the second team to shutout Pacific Lutheran on the season.

The Pirates travel to face Pacific (Ore.) and George Fox next weekend. The Pirates and Boxers will play at 7 p.m. next Friday night. Whitworth will take on the Bruins next Sunday at 2:30 p.m.
