Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - Sam Engle and Jonah Snyder each scored in the first half while the Whitworth defense held Puget Sound to just one shot attempt in the match en route to a 2-0 victory on Saturday afternoon at the Whitworth Soccer Field.
The eighth-ranked Pirates (7-0-0, 3-0-0 Northwest Conference) won their conference home opener against the lone NWC team they were unable to earn a win against last season. Puget Sound fell to 4-4 overall and 2-1 in conference play.
Engle scored his fourth goal of the season in the 14th minute, taking a pass from Samual Jarrett and firing a shot from roughly 20 yards away outside the 18-yard box on the left side of the field to the lower-right corner of the net.
Snyder doubled the Pirate lead in the 27th minute with his third goal of the year, taking a pass in the right side of the 18-yard box from Aaron Yanagi and finishing across the goal mouth to the upper-left corner of the goal from close range.
Whitworth dominated possession for the majority of the match, holding a 9-1 edge in shots during the first half and a 5-0 advantage in shots during the second half. Puget Sound's lone shot attempt came in the 3rd minute. A combination of the Whitworth possession advantage and strong defense kept the Loggers without a shot for the remainder of the contest.
Timmy Costa needed to make just one save as Whitworth earned its third consecutive shutout and fifth shutout overall in 2015.
Puget Sound goalkeeper Daniel Kirsch recorded four saves. Kirsch made three of his saves in the first half. There was only one shot on goal in the second half, when Kirsch stopped a shot from Snyder.
The Pirates will look to stay unbeaten on Sunday, remaining at home to face Pacific Lutheran at 2:30 p.m.
