Box Score SALEM, Ore. - Jonah Snyder scored twice and Tyler Pangia assisted two goals as Whitworth concluded its non-conference schedule with a 3-1 win over UC Santa Cruz in a neutral-site contest at Willamette University on Sunday afternoon.
Whitworth (4-0-0) and UC Santa Cruz (1-2-2) have faced each other at Willamette during each of the last three seasons and the Pirates have won each contest. Whitworth finished the non-conference portion of its regular-season schedule unbeaten for the second consecutive season.
Snyder netted his first goal of the season in the 8th minute off an assist from Pangia. Pangia sent a cross in from the left side and Snyder finished with a header for the early lead.
Whitworth retained the one-goal lead until the 59th minute when Snyder took a pass from Karl Muelheims and scored to the top of the net from roughly 16 yards away.
The Banana Slugs quickly answered to come within a goal of tying the match when Octavio Rodriguez converted a penalty kick in the 62nd minute.
Alfredo Ornelas later gave the Pirates a two-goal lead again with a goal from close range in the 78th minute, assisted by Pangia and Spencer Wolfe.
Timmy Costa collected two saves for Whitworth while UC Santa Cruz goalkeeper Connor Anderson made three saves.
Whitworth held an 11-8 edge in shot attempts, including a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal. The Pirates had nine corner kick chances while the Banana Slugs took eight corner kicks.
Whitworth returns to Oregon next weekend, opening the Northwest Conference schedule against Willamette on Saturday, Sept. 19. Whitworth will travel to face Linfield the following day. Both matches are set to begin at 2:30 p.m.
