Engle's Early Goal Sends Whitworth Past UMHB

Box Score

PARKLAND, Wash. - Sam Engle scored his third goal of the young season off a free kick in the 7th minute, lifting Whitworth to a 1-0 victory over the University of Mary Hardin-Baylor in a neutral-site match at Pacific Lutheran University on Thursday afternoon.

The early goal turned out to be the match-winner, although the Pirates (3-0-0) generated 18 shots and put eight shots on goal in the contest.

Engle has now scored one goal in each match of 2015 and has combined with fellow senior forward Karl Muelheims to produce eight of the Pirates' 13 goals through the first three matches of the season.

Whitworth recorded a shutout for the second consecutive match and held the Crusaders (1-1-0) without a shot on goal in the second half. UMHB put four shots on goal in the first half and recorded eight shot attempts during the match.

Timmy Costa collected four saves while UMHB goalkeeper Javier Zaragoza recorded seven saves.

Whitworth generated 14 corner kick chances while limiting UMHB to four corner kicks.

The Pirates conclude their non-conference schedule on Sunday with a match against UC Santa Cruz on the campus of Willamette University at 1 p.m. Whitworth will return to Willamette on Saturday, Sept. 19, to open the Northwest Conference schedule against the Bearcats.
