Box Score NEWBERG, Ore. - Sam Engle scored an equalizing goal via a penalty kick in the 78th minute as visiting Whitworth battled to a 1-1 tie after two overtime periods against George Fox on Sunday afternoon at the Austin Sports Complex.
No. 5 Whitworth (9-0-1, 6-0-1 Northwest Conference) found itself trailing in a match for the first time in 2015 after George Fox (5-6-1, 2-3-1) struck for a goal in the opening half.
The Bruins broke a streak of five consecutive shutouts by the Pirates with a goal by Luis Rangel in the 24th minute. It was Rangel's fourth goal of the season and assisted by Miguel Lopez.
Engle was awarded a penalty kick opportunity after George Fox's Evan Cooney was given a red card in the 78th minute. Engle converted the chance for his sixth goal of the season.
Playing with 10 players following Engle's goal, the George Fox defense withstood seven more shots on goal in the remainder of the second half and overtime.
Whitworth totaled 29 shots in the match, including 16 shots on goal. Engle led Whitworth with nine shots and seven shots on goal.
The Bruins generated 16 shots and put eight shots on goal. George Fox's shot total was the highest total for a team against the Pirates this season and the Bruins' eight shots on target tied for the most shots on goal against Whitworth by an opponent in 2015.
George Fox goalkeeper Murray Noble posted a career-high with 15 saves. Whitworth netminder Timmy Costa tied a season-high with seven saves.
The Pirates took 14 corner kicks while the Bruins did not record a corner kick in the contest. The physical match featured a combined 31 fouls, four yellow cards and one red card.
George Fox has not beaten the Pirates since 2004 but played its second consecutive overtime match against Whitworth. Whitworth topped visiting George Fox, 2-1, in overtime during the last meeting between the teams.
The Pirates return home to host Whitman at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 10.
