SPOKANE, Wash. – Brenna Bruil and Cassandra Mendoza led a blistering Whitworth offense during a 25-15, 25-17, 25-14 win over visiting Pacific (Ore.) in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Friday night.

The Pirates hit .311 as a team to improve to 17-6 overall and 11-2 in the NWC with their seventh straight victory.  Pacific dropped to 8-13, 5-8.

Bruil had 11 kills in 14 attempts for a hitting percentage of .786, while Mendoza had 11 kills in 22 attempts for a .500 hitting percentage.  Neither Pirate had a hitting error in the match.

Mendoza had five of her kills in the first set as Whitworth used a big early run to cruise to the win.  Mendoza had four of those kills in the opening minutes as the Pirates jumped out to a 10-1 lead.  The Boxers were able to pull back to within 15-8 on a kill by Emily Farnham, but Whitworth retook control with a 6-2 run and won the set on a Pacific attack error.

The Boxers jumped to an early lead of 5-2 in the second set before the Bucs scored four straight to take a lead.  Marie Rewick's kill put the visitors back ahead 11-9 and they were still within 18-16 after Ciara Smith's service ace.  But Whitworth closed the second set on a 7-1 run, taking advantage of three Boxer attack errors.  Mendoza closed the set out with her ninth kill of the match.  Karina Lees had four kills in the second frame for Whitworth.

The final set was tied 5-5 before Whitworth used a 7-1 run to take a lead it that would never be threatened.  Bruil had five of her kills in the final frame, including the match-winning point, as the Pirates hit .333 in the set.

No Pacific player reached double figures in kills.  Rewick led the way with six kills, while Tiare Kaopua and Hannah Smargiassi each had five.  The Boxers were held to a .030 team hitting percentage in the match.

Whitworth will host Linfield on Saturday night in the Pirates' final home match of the season.  With a win over the Wildcats the Pirates will clinch at least a share of the NWC title and the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament.
