Pacific Lutheran Hands No. 4 Whitworth First Loss

Box Score

PARKLAND, Wash. - Pacific Lutheran forward Eddie Na scored twice as the Lutes handed No. 4 Whitworth its first loss of the season, 2-0, on Saturday afternoon at East Field in western Washington.

Pacific Lutheran (12-4-0, 8-2-0 Northwest Conference) avenged a 1-0 loss to the Pirates earlier this season. Whitworth (12-1-1, 8-1-1) now sits one point clear of the Lutes in the conference standings. The Pirates have 25 points while the Lutes have 24 points and third-place Puget Sound (7-2-1) has 22 points. Each team has four matches remaining on the regular-season schedule.

Na put the Lutes ahead in the 22nd minute with a shot to the upper-right corner of the goal from roughly 10 yards away. Diego Aceves assisted the goal for Pacific Lutheran.

Na doubled the Pacific Lutheran lead with a 59th-minute goal, scoring off an assist from KC Phillips. He fired his goal-scoring shot from 15 yards out on the left side of the field.

The Pirates were held to only one shot in the first half before totaling six shots after halftime for a season-low seven shots in the match. Whitworth put four of those shots on target. Karl Muelheims put a shot on goal in the first half before Alfredo Ornelas, Eric Espinoza and Samual Jarrett each recorded a shot on goal in the second half.

Whitworth was shut out for the first time in 2015. The Lutes were able to score twice against a Pirate defense that had only conceded three goals entering the match.

Whitworth goalkeeper Timmy Costa collected six saves. Mike Arguello made four saves for the Lutes to record his fourth shutout of the season.

Each team took four corner kicks. All of the Pirates' corner kicks came in the second half.

The Lutes topped Whitworth for the first time since 2011 and extended their season win streak to four matches on Saturday.

The Pirates travel across town to face Puget Sound at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
