Box Score FOREST GROVE, Ore. - Karl Muelheims led Whitworth with two goals as the Pirates capped a stellar goal-scoring weekend with a 4-1 victory over Pacific on Sunday.
Whitworth (8-0-1, 3-0-1 NWC) extended its winning streak to three matches while Pacific dropped to 3-6-0, 0-4-0. The Pirates outscored their opponents 11-2 during the weekend, following a 7-1 trouncing of George Fox on Saturday.
Muelheims opened the scoring in the 23rd minute, putting away a ball that rebounded off the cross bar following a shot by Micheal Ramos. Samual Jarrett doubled the lead in the 37th minute, scoring his third goal of the season from 10 yards out. Jarrett spun to face the goal in the middle of the box and scored to the lower left corner.
Pacific cut into the lead shortly after halftime, as Elan Yogi put away a cross from Esteban Cruz in the 55th minute.
Muelheims responded seven minutes later with his second goal of the match in the 62nd minute, assisted by Rylan Berriman. Ramos added to the lead in the 79th minute, taking a pass from Eric Espinoza and scoring from eight yards away.
Timmy Costa made one save in recording his third-consecutive victory in goal.
Whitworth held a 17-3 shot advantage, including an 11-2 edge in the second half. The Pirates put eight shots on goal compared with two for the Boxers and held a 4-3 advantage on corner kicks.
Muelheims doubled his season goal total to four goals in the match.
Ramos has now scored or assisted a goal in each of the nine official matches for the Pirates in 2014. He concluded the weekend with four goals and four assists after a three-goal, four-assist performance against George Fox. The Whitworth forward leads the NWC in goals scored (10), assists (9) and points (29).
The Pirates return home to face a tough set of opponents next weekend in Pacific Lutheran and the defending NWC champion Loggers of Puget Sound. Both schools received first-place votes in the preseason coaches' poll and figure to contend for the conference crown in 2014.
