Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas – Kenny Love scored a season-high 20 points to lead visiting Whitworth to a 67-52 win at Trinity University on Thursday night.
The Pirates improved to 5-2 with their fourth straight win and all four of those victories have come on the road. Trinity, participants in the last three NCAA tournaments, dropped to 0-8.
The Tigers took an early 11-10 lead on a three-point play by AJ Pulliam. It would be Trinity's last lead of the game as Whitworth answered with a 12-2 run, including a pair of three-pointers by Love and two baskets by Taylor Farnsworth. Kionte Brown's three-pointer gave the Pirates a 34-24 lead heading to halftime.
After Trinity scored the opening basket of the second half to cut the margin to eight, Whitworth outscored the Tigers 15-4 to open a 49-30 lead. Christian Jurlina had back to back three-pointers during that stretch.
Trinity was able to close within 51-41 on Pulliam's jumper with just under eight minutes to play, but Love answered with four straight points to stem the tide.
Whitworth was hot from three-point range, making 58% (11-19) from beyond the arc. The Pirates finished 51.4% (19-37) overall. Whitworth also had another big night at the free throw line, making 18-23 (78.3%).
Jurlina added 16 points while Farnsworth finished with 10 points and eight boards.
Pulliam scored a game-high 22 points to lead Trinity. He was the only Tiger player in double figures.
Whitworth has a quick turnaround before its next game. The Pirates fly back from Texas on Friday morning to get ready for a home game against Marian (Wis.) on Sunday afternoon.
