Box Score ATLANTA - Micheal Ramos scored the match-winning goal in the 84th minute as 12th-ranked Whitworth edged Covenant College, 1-0, on Friday night and advanced to the second round of the NCAA Division III men's soccer tournament.
Whitworth (16-1-3) advanced to the second round of the tournament for the sixth time in program history and will face Berry College on Saturday at 3 pm (PST). Covenant (15-5-2), making its first-ever appearance in the tournament, had an eight-game winning streak snapped with the season-ending defeat.
Ramos scored his team-leading 14th goal of the season off a through-ball pass from Eric Espinoza. He fired a shot across his body while dribbling to his left in the 18-yard box, finishing to the far post and lower-right corner of the net.
The Pirates came up with a key team save to preserve the win during the closing minutes of the game when the Scots generated a corner kick opportunity in the 89th minute. Covenant forward Snoopy Davidson headed the ball on goal, but a Whitworth defender standing on the goal line was able to clear the ball out of the danger.
Both teams played solid defense, as promising offensive opportunities were limited. The Scots held an 8-6 advantage in shots, although Whitworth took four second-half shots compared with three for Covenant. Each team put three shots on goal in the match. Covenant held a 6-5 edge in corner kick opportunities.
Timmy Costa collected two saves, improving his goalkeeping record to 10-1-2 this season and earning his fifth shutout of the season.
Whitworth extended its streak of consecutive shutouts to four matches, and earned its seventh shutout victory of the season.
Berry defeated 11th-ranked Emory, 2-1, in overtime during the first match on Friday. Emory took a lead in the first half, but Berry tied the match in the 88th minute before netting a golden-goal winner in the second overtime.
The winner of Saturday's match between Whitworth and Berry will advance to the round of 16, which begins on Nov. 22. Whitworth and Berry have never met in men's soccer action.
