Bruil Leads Whitworth to a Sweep of George Fox

Box Score

SPOKANE, Wash. – Brenna Bruil had 12 kills and two block assists to lead Whitworth to a 25-19, 25-17, 25-23 win over visiting George Fox in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Friday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.

The Pirates improved to 12-5 overall and 5-2 in the NWC with their fifth straight conference victory.  The Bruins dropped to 2-15, 1-6.

Whitworth trailed only twice throughout the match, at 7-6 and 11-10 in the third set.  Otherwise the Bucs led or were tied the rest of the time.

"We controlled the pace tonight," said Whitworth head coach Kati Bodecker.  "We were digging balls right to our setter and getting smart kills in transition."

The Pirates led only 8-7 early in the opening set, but went on an 11-4 run to take a 19-11 lead.  Whitworth ended the set with a kill by Cassandra MendozaShawna Korshavn led the Bucs with four kills in the first set.

Whitworth dominated the second set from the opening points, using a 9-0 run to open up a 10-1 lead.  Bodecker began to substitute liberally from that point and George Fox was able to climb back to within 24-17 before a Bruin service error ended the set in Whitworth's favor.

George Fox tied the third set 6-6 on a block by Delaney Cruz and Camille Kassebaum then took its only lead 7-6 on a Whitworth attack error.  The teams traded points before the Bruins took the second and final lead (11-10) on another Pirate attack error.  Whitworth used a quick 5-2 run to retake a lead it would not relinquish again.  Fittingly, Bruil's kill ended the match for the Pirates.

The rest of Whitworth's stats were spread out throughout 13 players, the most to see action in a Northwest Conference match this season.  Haley Vick added seven kills, while Nicole Leonard and Korshavn had six each.  Maddye Dinsmore finished with 36 assists and two service aces.

"It's always great to have everyone contribute," Bodecker said. "One of the things I love best about our team is our depth."

Erin Campbell led George Fox with 10 kills and Kylee Adderson had seven.

Whitworth will host Lewis & Clark on Saturday night at 6:00 pm while the Bruins travel to take on Whitman.
