Whitworth Men Net Initial Win of 2013

Box Score

TYLER, Texas – A goal by David Starkovich midway through the second half lifted Whitworth to its first men's soccer victory of 2013, 1-0 over Mary Hardin-Baylor in a contest played at the University of Texas at Tyler on Sunday morning.

It was also the first career victory for Pirate head coach Morgan Cathey.  Whitworth went 1-0-1 in its season-opening trip to Texas.  UMHB fell to 1-2.

Neither team established control during a scoreless opening period.  Shots were equal at 4-4 and each goalkeeper was forced to make only a single save.

But the Pirates began to take control more in the second half, keeping possession for long stretches and putting more pressure on Crusader goal keeper Blake Lander.

In the 68th minute Starkovich took a pass from Zach Waldher near the top of the box and fired into the upper-corner of the net for his first goal of the season.  Both Starkovich and Waldher were on the field as Whitworth substitutes.

The Pirates outshot the Crusaders 10-8, including a 4-2 edge in shots on goal. Shane Nishioka-Healy made both saves to earn his first career shutout.

Whitworth will continue its non-conference schedule with a pair of matches in Salem, Oregon next weekend.  The Pirates will play Evergeen State on Saturday and UC Santa Cruz on Sunday at Willamette University.
