Box Score SAN ANTONIO, Texas. – The Whitworth University volleyball team won in straight sets for the second time on Saturday, defeating Trinity (Texas) 25-18, 25-18, 25-19, as the Pirates concluded their Trinity National Invitational action. Whitworth (6-6) finished the tournament with three straight wins.
Trinity (9-3) opened the match with a service ace and took an early 2-0 lead, but Whitworth came back. After using a Tiger ball handling error to take the lead, sophomore Maddye Dinsmore served up an ace to put Whitworth up 4-2. After keeping the score close early, senior Jalana White hit back-to-back kills to open up lead and Whitworth continued to roll. White's kill ended the first set in Whitworth's favor, 25-18.
After falling behind 9-4 in the second set, Whitworth went on a 7-0 run that included kills from White, senior Briauna Stadeli and sophomore Nicole Leonard to take an 11-9 lead, forcing a Trinity timeout. The Pirates kept the momentum out of the huddle, building the lead and keeping the Tigers out of striking distance. Jalana White served up an ace to end the set 25-18.
A Tiger service error gave Whitworth the first point of the third set, which was all the Pirates needed to start a run. After scoring the next four unanswered points, Whitworth kept a three point lead early. Trinity was forced to use two timeouts in the set, but could not break Whitworth's stride as the Pirates kept the Tigers out of rhythm and continued to attack. Nicole Leonard's kill closed the set, 25-19, and gave Whitworth the match victory.
Whitworth hit .206 for the match with seven service aces and four team blocks. Trinity hit .129 and had five team blocks.
Jalana White led the Pirates with 14 kills, three aces and a block. Maddye Dinsmore had 33 assists, 12 digs and two aces for the Pirates. Sophomore Izze Ginley had 18 digs, while Nicole Leonard had 11 digs.
Maggie Emodi led the Tigers with nine kills, 10 digs and an ace. Layne Hubbard had 12 digs, while Erika Edrington had 18 assists and an ace.
Whitworth opens conference play on Friday, Sept. 20 as the Pirates host Willamette University in the Whitworth Fieldhouse at 7:00 p.m.
