Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. – Will Wren scored a pair of first half goals to lead Whitworth to a 3-0 win over visiting Linfield in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Sunday afternoon.
The Pirates (11-3-3 overall, 9-2-2 NWC) are 6-0-1 in their last seven matches with one more to play in 2013. The Wildcats dropped to 8-8-1, 5-7-1 with their fourth straight setback.
Sam Selisch set up the first goal of the match, slotting a perfect pass to Wren who was cutting through the box. Wren's shot to the opposite upper corner of the net gave Whitworth a 1-0 lead in the 26th minute of the game.
Wren needed little help to score his second goal. He worked through and around three defenders before firing a low shot past Linfield keeper Grant Loriaux in the 44th minute. The two goals were Wren's third and fourth of the season.
Samual Jarrett tallied his first career goal at Whitworth in the 71st minute. Jonah Brown drove hard down the left sideline before firing a cross across to Jarrett, who flicked on the ball into the net.
Timmy Costa played the first 63 minutes in goal for Whitworth, making one save. Shane Nishioka-Healy had a pair of saves for the Pirates in the final 27 minutes. Loriaux made three stops for Linfield.
Whitworth only held a slim 15-12 edge in shots, 6-3 in shots on-goal. But 10 of Linfield's shots came in the second half as every available Pirate saw playing time over the final minutes of the match.
Whitworth will conclude the regular season at home next Saturday against Whitman College.
