Box Score FOREST GROVE, Ore. – Sam Selisch scored twice to lead Whitworth to a 2-0 win at Pacific University in a Northwest Conference men's soccer match on Friday night.
The Pirates improved to 9-3-2 overall and 7-2-1 in the NWC with their fourth straight victory. The Boxers dropped to 6-9-1, 1-8-1.
Neither team cracked the scoreboard in the first half and the primary reason for that was the stellar play of Pacific goalkeeper Michael Summers. Summers made five saves in the period to keep the Boxers tied with the Pirates. Meanwhile the Whitworth defense prevented any shots on goal in the first half.
Selisch broke through in the 55th minute, taking a forwarding pass from David Starkovich and sliding the ball past Summers for his seventh goal of the season.
Will Wren set up the second Selisch goal in the 72nd minute, driving on the goal and then dropping off a pass to Selisch for the finish. Selisch now leads the Pirates with eight goals this season.
Summers made five more saves in the second half to finish with ten stops as Whitworth outshot Pacific 29-4, including a 12-2 edge in shots on-goal. Timmy Costa made two saves to post his second shutout of the season.
Whitworth will look for its fifth straight win when the Pirates take on George Fox on Sunday afternoon in Newberg, Oregon.
