Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth made sure that the 2013 chase for the Northwest Conference championship in men's soccer would not be a runaway for Puget Sound as the Pirates defeated the Loggers 1-0 on Saturday afternoon.
Whitworth improved to 7-3-2 overall and 5-2-1 (16 points) in the NWC, moving into sole possession of second place. Puget Sound fell to 9-4 overall and 7-1 (21 points) in the NWC standings with its first conference loss.
Robby Ubben scored the only goal of the match in the 13th minute. He took a pass from Rylan Berriman and beat Logger keeper Nathan King for his third goal of the season.
Whitworth had two other good chances to score in the opening half, but King made saves on shots by Sam Selisch and Colin Shockman to keep the Loggers within a goal.
But the Pirate defense completely shut down the UPS attack on Saturday, limiting the Loggers to only three total shots – none of which forced Whitworth keeper Timmy Costa to make as save. The Bucs did not allow a single UPS shot after halftime.
Whitworth will host Pacific Lutheran, 1 -0 loser in double overtime at Whitman on Saturday, in a 2:30 pm match on Sunday. Puget Sound travels to play at Whitman.
The Pirates and Loggers split their season-series in 2013, each winning by a goal at home.
