Pirates Beat Pacific for 7th Shutout

Box Score

FOREST GROVE, Ore.  – Samuel Engle scored twice to lead visiting Whitworth to a 2-0 win at Pacific on Sunday afternoon at Lincoln Park Stadium.

The 11th-ranked Pirates improved to 7-0-1 overall and 4-0 (12 points) in the NWC.  The win also was Whitworth's seventh shutout in eight matches this year.  The Boxers dropped to 3-6, 1-3 (3 points).

Though the match remained scoreless through the first 70 minutes, Whitworth controlled the play throughout the contest.  The Pirates outshot Pacific 19-6, including a 9-1 edge in shots on-goal.

Engle finally broke the scoring impasse when he scored from nearly point-blank range after getting a pass from Will Wren in the 71st minute.  It was Engle's first goal of the season.

Engle added an insurance goal for the Pirates in the 87th minute, getting behind the Pacific defense and beating Boxer goalkeeper Michael Summers with a low shot to the corner of the net.  Colin Shockman had the assist.

Once again the clean sheet for the Pirates was a team effort.  Kyle Novak only had to make a single save to keep his season goals-against average at 0.00.

Whitworth remains tied atop the NWC men's soccer standings with Pacific Lutheran (5-3-1, 4-0, 12 points) and Puget Sound (7-1-1, 4-0, 12 points).  The Pirates will host PLU and UPS in a key weekend of action this coming Saturday and Sunday.
