Pirate Men Open With Scoreless Draw

Box Score

St. PAUL, Minn. -- Despite dominating possession and shots over the final 65 minutes of play, Whitworth had to settle for a 0-0 season-opening men's soccer draw on Friday afternoon at Hamline University.

The Pirates finished with a 13-6 advantage in total shots, including a 10-1 edge in shots on goal.  Whitworth outshot the Auggies 11-2 after halftime and had a 9-4 overall edge in corner kicks.

Pirate goalkeeper Kyle Novak only had to make one save to earn his first shutout of 2012.  Meanwhile Augsburg keeper Clayton Lynch came up with ten stops in the match to stymie the Pirate attack.

Whitworth had several good chances to find the net, but the best might have been a header by Brandon Meyer with eight minutes left that forced Lynch to punch the ball over the top bar.  Late in the second overtime Samuel Engle headed a ball just over the bar off of a Pirate corner kick.

Whitworth will conclude its trip to the Twin Cities with a match against host Hamline on Saturday at 3:30 pm (CDT) / 1:30 pm (PDT).  The Pipers fell 1-0 to Pacific Lutheran in Friday's late match.
