Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. -- Kaimi and Ka'ipo Rocha led Whitworth to a 25-17, 25-23, 25-19 win over visiting Pacific in a Northwest Conference volleyball match on Saturday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse.
Kaimi Rocha posted a match-high 15 kills, while Ka'ipo added eight kills and led all players with seven block assists.
The Pirates (7-4 overall, 2-0 NWC) never trailed in the opening set, jumping to a 9-2 lead on a kill by Kaimi Rocha and a 12-3 lead after an attack error by the Boxers (7-4, 1-1). Ka'ipo Rocha's kill gave Whitworth a 19-11 lead and Kaimi ended the set at 25-17 with her fifth kill of the match.
Whitworth seemed in control of the second set after a Pacific error gave the Bucs a 17-11 advantage. But the Boxers rallied and got within 23-22 on a kill by Haley Bedell. Kaimi Rocha, the 2010 NWC Player of the Year, answered for Whitworth with two more kills to keep the Boxers at-bay in a 25-23 final.
The third set was the closest of the night, for a while, with 11 ties and seven lead changes. Pacific took its final lead at 16-14 on a kill by Kelsey Takeshima. But Whitworth outscored the Boxers 11-3 the rest of the way. Ka'ipo Rocha took over offensively for the Pirates in the final stanza, recording six of her kills in that set.
Whitworth hit .181 as a team and served seven aces, five by Kaimi Rocha. Bree Riddle had 32 assists and Amanda Grumbach led the Bucs with 15 digs.
Pacific hit .036 as a team. Takeshima led the Boxers with nine kills and six blocks, while Mariah McHolland had seven kills. Jade Thompson had 11 digs.
Whitworth will hit the road next weekend with matches on Friday at Linfield and on Saturday at Willamette.
