Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. -- Finishing out their outstanding four-year careers in spectacular fashion, twin sisters Kaimi and Ka'ipo Rocha combined for 25 kills to lead 23rd-ranked Whitworth to a 25-18, 25-16, 25-14 win over visiting Lewis & Clark on Friday night at the Whitworth Fieldhouse, clinching the outright Northwest Conference volleyball championship for the Pirates.
Whitworth (19-6 overall, 14-2 in the NWC) earned its second straight conference title. The Bucs wait for Monday morning's announcement of the NCAA Division III field to find out when and where they are headed for the regional rounds of the national tournament.
Kaimi Rocha had 13 kills and 12 digs, while Ka'ipo Rocha added 12 kills while hitting .611 in the match. The twin sisters have been starters since their first day at Whitworth and they closed out their final regular season match at home by leading their team to victory. The pair was joined by fellow seniors Bree Riddle, Jordon Hoffnagle and Amanda Grumbach during pre-match ceremonies recognizing all of their accomplishments.
Lewis & Clark (13-12, 9-6) led only one time in the entire match - after Margaret Dowling's kill gave the Pioneers a 1-0 lead in the opening set. But Jalana White had two kills to help Whitworth grab a 7-3 lead. The Bucs stretched the lead to 17-10 on an L&C attack error, then led 23-16 following a kill by Grumbach. Another Grumbach kill ended the set in favor of the Pirates.
Whitworth ran out to an 8-4 lead in the second set, but three straight Lewis & Clark blocks brought the Pioneers to within 13-12. The Pirates responded with five straight points to open an 18-12 advantage and Whitworth pulled away to win 25-16 following a kill by Kristine Kardell.
The Pirates never trailed in the final set, but a block by Kataleya Milan pulled L&C to within 10-9. The Pioneers were still within 14-11 following a kill by Milan, but Whitworth then closed the set and the match on an 11-3 run. Kaimi Rocha served back to back aces to help get the rally started and Grumbach closed out the match with her ninth kill of the night.
Grumbach added 12 digs, while Whitney Santos led all players with 13 digs. But Santos made her biggest impact behind the service line where she served four aces. Riddle finished with 38 assists.
Dowling led L&C with eight kills and she was in on four block assists. Alici Callejo-Black added six kills and led all players with six blocks as the Pioneers finished the night with 10.0 total team blocks. Elena Hoff led L&C with 11 digs.
The NWC crown is the fifth won by the Pirates during the 13-year career of Whitworth head coach Steve Rupe.
