Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - The Whitworth men's soccer team (11-3-1, 9-2-0) dispensed of Pacific (Ore.) University (4-10-1, 4-6-1) with relative ease on Sunday afternoon with a 4-0 shutout.
The Bucs assaulted the Boxer defense with all four goals in a span of less than twenty minutes. Nate Spangler (Sr., MF, Rio Rancho, N.M.) got the cross from JT Meyer (Sr., MF, Olympia, Wash.) in the 12th minute to start it off. Spangler made a swift kick with his left and put it in the right side of the net to get the lead. The goal is Spangler's sixth this year.
Cameron Bushey (Sr., MF, Spokane, Wash.) served up his specialty on a free kick directly in front of Pacific's goal box. Taylor Willi (Sr., D, Grants Pass, Ore.) was fouled and Bushey stepped up to take the kick. He sent the ball sailing past a wall of Boxers into the goal at 16:51.
The next two points were made between the 27th and 31st minute mark. Sam Selisch (So., MF, Port Townsend, Wash.) made his presence known first off of a deflected kick and shot the ball past the Pacific goalkeeper for a 3-0 lead. Four minutes later Selisch was the beneficiary of a cross from Andrew French (So., MF, Lacey, Wash.) and he tapped it into the goal for the final of the match. Selisch has four goals in 2011.
In the second half both teams subsituted liberally but neither team put up another point and the game would end with a 4-0 Pirate victory.
Dion Coxe (Sr., D, Eugene, Ore.) and Nic Shaw (Sr., F, Helena, Mont.) anchored the formidable Pirate defense and prevented the Boxers from ever attempting a shot.
Up next the Pirates will face Linfield and Willamette on Halloween weekend. Both contests will begin at 2:30 PM.
