Box Score SPOKANE, Wash. - On Saturday afternoon the Whitworth men's soccer team (10-3-1, 8-2) took care of business against George Fox University (2-11-1, 0-9-1) with a score of 4-1.
The Pirates had ample opportunities early but was unable to put any past GFU goalkeeper Elliott Davis. Davis saved four shots but eventually the Bruin wall fell.
Robby Ubben (Fr., F, Gig Harbor, Wash.) was the first Buc to strike when the Whitworth squad charged down the field and passed the ball through the Bruin defense until it found Ubben for the go-ahead goal. Ryan Wood (Jr., MF, Palo Alto, Calif.) and Anders Nostdahl (So., MF, Sandpoint, Idaho) combined for the assist.
in the 53rd minute of play Taylor Willi (Sr., D, Grants Pass, Ore.) wrapped the ball around the GFU defense to put it into the upper left corner of the net. The goal was Willi's second of the season.
George Fox showed signs of life in the 58th minute when Luke Dickens shot off of a rebound into the bottom left corner to bring his Bruin squad within striking distance of the Pirates.
Soon after Dicken's goal Robby Ubben performed a similar feat on the opposite end of the pitch. Ubben recovered a shot on the goal and fired it into the George Fox net to further the Whitworth lead and mark his sixth goal of the year.
In the 73rd minute WU finished off the young George Fox team for good. Matt Bray (Fr., MF, Spokane, Wash.) set up Kekoa Mountcastle (Jr., F, Waiehu, Hawaii) for a one-on-one against the goalie. Mountcastle skipped the ball up field and found Andrew French (So., MF, Lacey Wash.) who narrowly missed the sidebar with his shot and tapped it in for the final goal of the match.
The rest of the game resulted in little for either team. Whitworth shot the ball 20 times throughout regulation while GFU struggled against the Whit defense and only managed seven, three of which were blocked by Brian Sherpe (Sr., GK, Centennial, Colo.).
Sunday afternoon the Pirates are set to battle Pacific (Ore.) University at 2:30 PM on the Whitworth soccer field.
