Steve Flegel

Steve Flegel became Whitworth’s sports information director in 1995 after serving the school for two years as the assistant aquatics director.  He had also worked as a stringer and correspondent for the Spokane Spokesman-Review newspaper.  In 1997 the sports information position at Whitworth became full-time.  In 2004 Flegel was promoted to the title of Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Information.  In 2022 the title changed to Assistant Director of Athletics for Sports Communications.

Flegel also worked as the Information Director of the Northwest Conference, of which Whitworth is a member institution, from July of 1999 until December of 2011.   

Flegel has served as the Media Coordinator for several NCAA Division III Championship events, including the 2000 cross country championships, football first and second round games in 2001, 2006 and 2018, volleyball regionals in 2002 and 2005, men’s soccer regionals and sectionals in 2005, and men’s basketball first and second round games from 2008 through 2011 and again in 2013 and 2016.  Whitworth hosted consecutive NCAA Division III regional tournaments in softball and baseball in May of 2016 and another off-site baseball regional in 2018.  He has also volunteered at the NCAA Division I women’s volleyball final four in 1997, the NCAA Division I women’s basketball regionals in 2001 and the NCAA Division I men’s basketball first and second rounds in 2003, 2007 and 2016.

Flegel has been active in College Sports Communicators (formerly CoSIDA) since 1997, serving on the Ethics Committee from 2005-2008 and was selected to the organization's Board of Directors in the fall of 2011, serving a term of five years.  He was an original member of the NCAA Statistics Advisory Board from 2008-10 and also served as a Division III representative on the Statcrew Next Generation Advisory Board from 2010-12.  Flegel is currently a member of the CSC U committee, for which he was chair from 2020 through the spring of 2022, and the CSC Advocacy Committee.

Flegel was voted as the Jack Sareault Northwest Conference SID of the Year in 2006, the initial year of that award.  He has received the award three times since, in 2013, 2019 and 2023.  He was also selected for the AVCA Grant Burger Media Award for the NCAA Division III West Region in 2006.
