COLFAX, Wash. – Racing against mostly NCAA Division I opponents, the Whitworth cross country teams took advantage of a chance to get ready for the rest of the season on Friday evening at the WSU Cougar Classic at Colfax Golf Club.
The Pirate men finished 9th of 10 teams, while the women took eighth out of eight teams. WSU used the meet as dry run for the upcoming NCAA Division I Regionals in November.
Intentionally running as a pack, the top seven Whitworth men crossed within 12 places of one another. Joel Mott was 90th, covering the eight kilometer course in 27:23.7. Aidan Smith (27:33.0) was 93rd, Caleb Grode (27:44.5) was 94th and August Albers (27:45.6) took 95th.
Gonzaga's men (22 points) edged WSU (45) to win the men's team race. Whitworth scored 300 points to finish ahead of Walla Walla University (302).
Becky George led the Pirate women by finishing 66th with a time of 23:45.6 on the six kilometer course. Karina Olson (24:31.4) was 79th, Krystal Roberts (24:44.9) was 82nd and Ellie Shoop (24:59.8) took 85th.
The WSU women (43 points) were able to hold off Gonzaga (48) for the team title. Whitworth scored 252 for eighth place.
