SPOKANE, Wash.– Whitworth beat nationally ranked Pacific Lutheran with a volleyball sweep on Saturday night in the Fieldhouse (25-13, 26-24, 25-20). Last time these teams met at the Fieldhouse, Pacific Lutheran came back from a 2-0 deficit to beat the Bucs. This year, the Pirates' .226 hitting percentage led to their 3-0 victory. Whitworth advanced to 10-5 overall, 5-1 in the NWC. The 9th-ranked Lutes fell to 12-2, 5-1.
The Pirates began the match with a 6-0 run. Erin White had a dump that put the Bucs up 12-6, followed by a kill from Jessica Schmautz. Schmautz had 7 of her 17 total kills in the first set, giving the Bucs the first game of the night.
A kill from Madison Douglas started the second set, sparking another 6-0 Bucs spurt. The Lutes made a comeback at 16-16, and kept the game within one until the final points. Two big kills from Iris Tikhonov and Lauren Budde clinched the set for Whitworth.
In a tight third set, a kill from Schmautz spread the lead to 13-9. The Lutes had a kill and forced 2 errors to tie the game 15-15, but Budde had an attack to spark a 4-0 run for the Bucs. She had the final kill of the set, and would finish the match with a .529 hitting percentage.
Addy Woolery finished with 22 digs for the Pirates, and White added 35 assists. Budde had 10 kills, and Douglas concluded the night with nine.
Isabella Zubrod had 12 kills for the Lutes, and Ava Nelson finished with 20 assists.
Whitworth returns to the Fieldhouse on Wednesday, October 3rd to play Whitman at 6:00.
