SPOKANE, Wash. – Visiting Lewis-Clark State rallied for a 5-4 victory over Whitworth in a non-conference women's tennis match on Sunday at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Warriors improved to 8-13 this season while the Pirates dropped to 5-11. Today's contest was a rematch from February 6th, which was won by LCSC 8-1.
Whitworth claimed two of the three doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead. Bella Hoyos and KC McConnell rolled to an easy 8-2 win over Lauren Lang and Kianna Arthur at #1 doubles. LCSC got an 8-6 win at #2 doubles when Stephanie Buckingham and Deanri Human edged Jennifer Adams and Emma Jo Wiley 8-6. But the Pirate pair of Paige Rohrbach and Ashley Winslow pulled out a 9-7 win over Jen Roux and Anna Rodriguez at #3.
Playing on only three of the Scotford courts because the men's match between the Pirates and Warriors was also happening simultaneously, the contest was still undecided after the first three singles contests. But all three were won by LCSC to give the Warriors a 4-2 lead. Human defeated Adams 6-1, 6-4 at #3 in the first singles match completed. Then Lang nipped Hoyos 7-5, 6-4 at #1 before Buckingham came from behind to edge Wiley 2-6, 7-5, 7-6 (7-1).
McConnell pulled Whitworth to within 4-3 by defeating Arthur 6-3, 6-2 at #4 singles. But Rodriguez clinched the team win for LCSC with a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Winslow at #5. Rohrbach scored the Pirates' final point with a 6-1, 4-6, 1-0 (10-2) victory over Roux at #6.
Whitworth will conclude the 2016 regular season with matches next weekend at Pacific Lutheran (April 16) and Puget Sound (April 17). If the Pirates can win both contests, they will earn a bid to the 2016 NWC Tournament.
