KISSIMMEE, Fla. – Whitworth University rallied from an early deficit to defeat Luther College 6-3 in a non-conference women's tennis match on Monday morning at the Oak Street Tennis Center.
The Pirates improved to 3-7 with their second straight win while the Norse fell to 9-4.
Luther jumped out to a 2-1 lead after doubles play. Bella Hoyos and Jennifer Adams picked up a tough 8-6 win over Hailey Johnson and Lauren Welch at #1 doubles. That came after Luther's Olivia Heitz and Claire Christian defeated KC McConnell and Paige Rohrbach 8-3 at #3 doubles. Even though it was the most lopsided doubles match, the last one done was Jackie Cychosz and Britta Pressler over the Pirate pair of Emma Jo Wiley and Anabelle Burns 8-1 at #2 doubles.
But Whitworth rebounded to take five out of the six singles contests, including all three that went past two sets. Hoyos began the comeback with a 6-1, 6-1 win over Cychosz at #1 singles. But after Anna Person held off Whitworth's Ashley Winslow 7-5, 6-4 at #6 singles the Norse still had a 3-2 lead.
The Pirates would take all four of the remaining contests. Adams pulled out a 4-6, 7-5, 1-0 (10-7) comeback over Welch at #2 singles to tie the score 3-3. Then Wiley finished off Heitz 6-4, 6-4 at #3 singles to give Whitworth a 4-3 lead.
The Pirates clinched the team victory after McConnell held off a match point at 10-9 in the tiebreaker set to defeat Pressler 2-6, 6-2, 1-0 (12-10) at #5 singles.
Burns gave Whitworth an insurance point with her 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-7) victory over Christian at #4 singles.
The Pirates will play a second match in Florida on Wednesday when they take on Birmingham-Southern.
