SALEM, Ore. – Whitworth finished off a weekend road trip to Oregon with a 9-0 win in women's tennis at Willamette late on Sunday morning.
The Pirates, who fell 8-1 at #35 Linfield on Saturday, are now 2-7 overall and 2-5 in the NWC. The Bearcats dropped to 0-7. Both of Whitworth's team victories this season have come against Willamette.
KC McConnell made her women's tennis debut on Sunday after joining the Pirates following the conclusion of the women's basketball season.
McConnell and Caitlyn Heredia got Whitworth on the board with an 8-1 win over Katie Adams and Noemi Cruz-Cruz at #3 doubles. Bella Hoyos and Jennifer Adams finished off Alexis Gjurasic and Mikaila Smith by the same score at #1 doubles. Then Paige Rohrbach and Ashley Winslow defeated Willamette's Hannah Andres and Rachel Kong 8-2 at #2 doubles.
Whitworth went on to sweep all six singles matches. McConnell won her match at #5 singles without giving up a game, blanking Cruz-Cruz 0 and 0. Heredia was the first Pirate done, defeating Kong 6-1, 6-1 at #6. Hoyos got by Smith 6-0, 6-3 at #1 singles.
On Saturday the Pirates fell to Linfield for the second time this season. But the match was closer than the final 8-1 score would indicate.
Three of the six singles matches went three sets. Rorhbach defeated Courtney Mostul 4-6, 6-2, 1-0 (10-5) at #5 singles for Whitworth's only point. But Anabelle Burns was tied 6-6 in the third-set tiebreaker before she had to withdraw because of an injury.
Wiley also went three sets before she was defeated by Marisa Doveri 6-4, 1-6, 7-5 at #3 singles. In addition, Winslow (7-5, 6-4) and Jennifer Adams (6-4, 6-3) had close matches that were done in two sets.
Whitworth will return to action next week when the Pirates play three non-conference matches during a spring break trip to Florida.
