Trio of Pirates Named Second Team All-NWC

SPOKANE, Wash. – A trio of Whitworth women's tennis players were named to the 2015 All-Northwest Conference Second Team, according to the official list released today by the conference office.

All three are repeat selections to the All-Northwest Conference team.  Saryn Mooney, a senior from Centennial, Colorado, was previously a two-time First Team All-NWC selection.  Taylor Peña, a junior from Medford, Oregon, was also a First Team All-NWC choice in 2014.  Bella Hoyos, a sophomore from Bellingham, Washington, is now a Second Team honoree for two years in a row.

All three Pirates played in the top three spots on the Whitworth singles ladder this season.  Hoyos went 13-5 in her 18 singles matches.  She was 9-1 while playing at #3, 3-1 at #2 and 1-3 at #1 on the ladder.  She was 10-2 in matches against NWC opponents.  Mooney finished the season 7-8 in her 15 singles matches, 6-4 within the NWC.  She went 5-6 at #3 and 2-2 at #3.  Peña finished the season 3-13, playing the most matches of any Pirate at #1 on the ladder.  She was 2-12 at #1 and 1-1 in the second spot.

Hoyos and Mooney were partners in doubles 10 times and they posted a record of 7-3.  Hoyos finished 11-7 overall in 18 doubles matches, as did Mooney.  Peña went 6-10 in her doubles matches this season, 14 of which were played with Jennifer Adams as her partner.

This trio of Pirates led Whitworth to a final record of 9-9.  But the Bucs finished 8-4 within the conference and advanced to play at last weekend's NWC Tournament in Walla Walla.
