WALLA WALLA, Wash. – The Whitworth University women's tennis season came to a close with a 5-0 loss to 23rd-ranked Whitman in a semifinal of the 2015 Northwest Conference tournament on Friday.
The Pirates conclude the season with a 9-9 record. The Bucs had finished fourth in the final NWC standings with an 8-4 mark.
The host Missionaries jumped to an almost insurmountable lead by sweeping all three doubles contests. Madison Webster and Hanna Greenberg scored an 8-2 win over Bella Hoyos and Saryn Mooney at #2 doubles. Courtney and Morgan Lawless followed with a win over Taylor Peña and Jennifer Adams at #1 singles by the same 8-2 score. Whitman completed the sweep in doubles when Erin Bell and Allie Wallin defeated Morgan McDivitt and Annabelle Burns 8-4 at #3 doubles.
Trailing 3-0 after doubles, Whitworth would need to win five of the six singles matches. But the Missionaries made sure that would not happen.
Courtney Lawless defeated Hoyos 6-0, 6-1 at the top of the singles ladder to put Whitman on the brink of clinching the team win. Wallin got the Missionaries over the top with her 6-0, 6-1 win over Adams at #4 singles.
Whitman was ahead in all four of the other singles matches, which went unfinished once the team victory was clinched. The Missionaries advance to play the winner of the second semifinal (Lewis & Clark and Linfield) in tomorrow's NWC Tournament Final.
