SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth earned its second Northwest Conference women's tennis win of the weekend by defeating visiting George Fox 7-2 on Sunday at the Scotford Tennis Center.
The Pirates improved to 2-2 overall and 2-1 in the NWC. The Bruins fell to 3-3, 0-2.
Whitworth took a commanding 3-0 lead after doubles play. Morgan McDivitt and Bella Hoyos pulled out a 9-7 win over Andrea Motley and Catrina Kwong at #2 doubles in the closest of the three contests. The longest match was at #3 where Saryn Mooney and Calylee Lamm defeated Ali Diehl and Krista Rey 8-4. Taylor Peña and Jennifer Adams beat Sarah Tuemmler and Chantelle Hadeed 8-2 at #1 in the easiest win of the three doubles matches.
The Pirates then won two of the top three singles contests to clinch the team victory. Hoyos dominated Taylor Barnes 6-0, 6-1 at #3 and Mooney followed with a 6-4, 6-1 win over Hadeed at #2 to increase the margin to an insurmountable 5-0. Tuemmler edged Peña 3-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-6) at #1 singles for the Bruins' first point.
Adams defeated Kwong in a super tiebreaker at #4 and McDivitt rolled by Motley 1 and 1 at #5 for the other two Whitworth points. Diehl got by Lamm at #6 in a super tiebreaker for the final George Fox point.
Whitworth will hit the road next weekend for matches at Willamette (Saturday) and Whitman (Sunday) during the longest NWC road trip of the season.
