SPOKANE, Wash. – Most of the close matches went Whitman's way, allowing the visiting Missionaries to come away with a 7-2 win over Whitworth in the Northwest Conference women's tennis opener for both schools on Saturday.
The Missionaries took all three doubles matches. Courtney and Morgan Lawless teamed to defeat Taylor Peña and Jennifer Adams 8-5 at #1 doubles, while Hanna Greenberg and Madison Webster beat Whitworth's Morgan McDivitt and Saryn Mooney by the same score at #3. The closest doubles match came at #2 where Erin Bell and Katrina Allick edged Annabelle Burns and Bella Hoyos 9-7.
Whitworth got a pair of wins in singles. Hoyos upset Morgan Lawless 6-4, 6-7, 7-6 at #3 singles. Saryn Mooney got by Jenna Dobrin 6-4, 6-7, 6-4 at #2 singles.
Courtney Lawless defeated Peña 6-2, 6-3 at #1 singles in the first individual match to go final. Bell beat Adams 7-6, 6-2 at #4 and Allie Wallin topped Burns 6-4, 6-2 at #4. McDivitt pushed Alexandra Sigouin to three sets at #6 before falling 6-3, 2-6, 1-0 (13-11).
Whitworth will host Pacific (Ore.) next Saturday.
