NEWBERG, Ore. – Whitworth women's soccer picked up their first road win of the season with a 1-0 victory against George Fox on Saturday afternoon.
With the win, the Pirates (4-3, 3-0 NWC) remain undefeated in the Northwest Conference while the Bruins drop to 3-3 overall and 1-2 in conference.
In a match where momentum fluctuated between the Pirates and Bruins, Kathryn Bischoff's goal put Whitworth in the driver's seat. The senior knocked in her second goal of the season on a penalty kick in the 23rd minute to give Whitworth the advantage they carried to the final whistle.
Both of Bischoff's goals this season have been decisive, giving Whitworth a lead they wouldn't relinquish.
The other notable shot in the match came from the Bruins' Abby Anderson. It was saved by Molly Webster, but ended a stretch of 160 consecutive minutes where the Pirates didn't allow a shot on goal.
Entering halftime, Anderson's shot on goal was one of three from George Fox, equaling Whitworth's total. The Bruins led the Pirates 7-4 in total shots at the half.
The second half wouldn't see much offense from either team. The Bruins put two more shots on goal and both teams combined for eight more shots, but neither squad found the back of the net. George Fox finished the match with a 12-7 edge in shots and a 5-3 lead in shots on goal. Whitworth took four corner kicks to the Bruins' one.
Several players had solid matches for the Pirates. Rachel Wofford, Bischoff, and Kelly Wucherer took Whitworth's shots on goal, and Molly Webster saved every shot the Bruins put on frame. She finished the match with a season-high five saves.
Next up, the Whitworth women head to Forrest Grove, Ore. to take on Pacific (Ore.). The match takes place tomorrow at Noon as the Pirates look to remain undefeated in the Northwest Conference.
