SPOKANE, Wash. – The Carroll College Saints took down the Whitworth Pirates 1-0 in the final non-conference matchup of Whitworth's season.
The win moves the Saints to 2-2 on the season, while the loss drops the Pirates to 1-3.
Carroll scored the match's only goal in the 21st minute when Madison Apsey picked up a loose ball outside the penalty area. Apsey took two dribbles to create space before firing a shot past Molly Webster to give the Saints a 1-0 lead.
The Pirates struggled early in the half to maintain possession of the ball, but managed to create a couple quality chances. Arielle Van Peursem and Morgan Howe made enough space to get off good shots in the first half, but neither found the back of the net. The match entered halftime with a 1-0 score favoring Carroll.
Whitworth's possession problems persisted into the second half. Usually known for hanging on to the ball for long spells of time, the Pirates couldn't keep the ball enough to create many quality chances in the second half.
For their part, the Saints pressured Whitworth into several turnovers. Though the only finished the second half with three shots, Carroll gave themselves chances to put the ball in the back of the net until the match's final ten minutes.
In those last ten minutes, the Pirates attempted a comeback. Whitworth took three shots in the match's final ten and forced multiple corner kicks. Midfielders Michele Whan and Kelly Wucherer both managed shots, but neither snuck past Saint goalkeeper Devan Murfitt. From there, the clock ran out on any chance for a tie.
Whitworth ended the match with the advantage in shots (10-9), saves (5-3), and corner kicks (5-4). Leah Corra received a caution in the 63rd minute.
Up next, Whitworth remains at home to open their Northwest Conference season. The Pirates take on Willamette on Saturday, Sept. 16 and Lewis & Clark on Sunday, Sept. 17. Both matches begin at Noon.
Game 2: Corban University 2, Whitman College 0
The Corban University Warriors fired away 20 shots, scoring on two of them to defeat Whitman College 2-0.
The Warriors controlled the match in its entirety, finishing with an 11-1 advantage in shots on goal and 7-1 edge in corner kicks. Nadine Correa scored the first goal of the match, and assisted on Corban's second goal. Holly Martinez Moorman scored the Warrior's second goal.
Both teams continue their seasons next weekend. Whitman returns home to face off with Lewis & Clark and Willamette. Corban's road trip continues at Evergreen State University and Northwest University.
