SPOKANE, Wash. – Whitworth women's soccer opens its home season this weekend with matches against a pair of NAIA squads: Corban University and Carroll College (Mont.). The Pirates take on Corban on Saturday and Carroll on Sunday. Both matches begin at 11:00 a.m.

As part of a tournament this weekend, the Pirates are also hosting a pair of matches featuring both NAIA teams taking on the Whitman Blues. The Blues play Carroll on Saturday, Sept. 9 at 1:30 p.m. and take on Corban on Sunday, Sept. 10 at 1:00 p.m.

Check the Whitworth women's soccer schedule for live links to the matches this weekend.

The Pirates: Whitworth (0-2-0) began its season on the road last weekend in the Bob Baptista Invitational at Wheaton College. They're looking to bounce back this weekend after a pair of losses to Wheaton and Denison University.

The Pirates fell to Wheaton 4-1 in their first match of the season. The Thunder's Chelsea Gnan was too much for Whitworth defense, finishing with three goals. Leah Corra scored the Pirates' lone goal on a well-placed pass from Morgan Howe

Whitworth took on Denison the next day and dropped the match 2-1. McKenzie Hemp utilized a great solo effort to score the Pirates' goal, but Whitworth couldn't manufacture enough chances late in the match to earn extra time. Goalkeepers Sienna Tanner and Jenna Rogers combined for seven saves in the loss.

Not Smoked Out (Yet): Wildfires burning all over the Pacific Northwest covered the city of Spokane with a layer of smoke this week. Contingency plans are in the works to move the matches to an area unaffected by the smoke if needed. Check back here in the upcoming days for more information.

The Warriors: Corban (1-2-0) enters the weekend after kicking off a Northwest Conference road trip with the win over Pacific (Ore.) on Sunday. The trip continues on Thursday as the Warriors take on Lewis & Clark before traveling to Spokane to battle the Pirates on Saturday and Whitman on Sunday.

Corban returns All-Cascade Collegiate Conference first team selection Holly Martinez Moorman from last season's squad that finished 12-6-1. Martinez Moorman led the Warriors with eight goals in 18 matches last season. She also finished with two assists.

The Saints: Carroll (0-2-0) is still looking to pick up its first win of the season. The Saints dropped matches to NCAA Division II Northwest Nazarene University and NAIA foe Hastings College (Neb.). Carroll is still looking for its first goal of the season after enduring a pair of shutouts.

Last season, the Saints won the Cascade Collegiate Conference tournament, earning a spot in the NAIA tournament, where they were bounced in the first round by 10th-ranked Westmont (Calif.). The Saints return All-CCC Honorable Mention choice Taryn Neameyer from last season's title team.

The Saints and Pirates squared off last season in non-conference play. Carroll defeated Whitworth 2-0.

Looking Ahead: Whitworth opens Northwest Conference play next weekend. The Pirates take on Willamette Saturday, Sept. 16 and Lewis & Clark Sunday, Sept. 17.
