SPOKANE, Wash. – Lexie Meanor scored seven of Whittier's twenty goals to lead the Poets to a 20-5 victory over the Whitworth Pirates in Saturday's non-conference contest.
Trinity Frank led the Pirates (0-4, 0-2 NWC) with three goals, four draw controls, and five groundballs. Jordan Cain scored the Bucs' other two goals and also picked up two groundballs from the midfield.
The Bucs hung with Whittier (3-6, 0-4 SCIAC) for the initial part of the first half, as Cain opened Whitworth's scoring with a goal that cut the Poets' lead to 2-1. After the Poets responded with two more goals, Frank sliced the lead in half with a goal of her own.
Whittier bounced back from Frank's first goal by scoring the next five to take a 9-2 lead. Cain halted the run with an unassisted score, but the Poets took an 11-3 lead into halftime.
Whitworth couldn't stage a comeback in the second half, getting just two goals from Frank in the final 30 minutes. Kianna Fiorito picked up her first assist of the season on Frank's first goal of the half.
Laura Wells, who shifted from defense to goalkeeper at the beginning of the season to fill a need at the position, set a career-high in saves with eight. Wells also tied for the team-lead in groundballs with five. Kalista Fourre forced four turnovers, a game-high and her best total of the year.
The Pirates continue their spring break road trip on Monday, March 25 when they take on Redlands at 7 p.m.
