WALLA WALLA, Wash. – Whitworth University finished in third place at the Northwest Conference women's golf tournament on Sunday at Wine Valley Golf Club to claim third place in the final league standings.
Led by Cheyenne Marchand and Allie Slingsby, the Pirates broke away from a three-way tie with Lewis & Clark and Pacific Lutheran following Saturday's first round to earn sole possession of third place.
Marchand (87-76 – 163) and Slingsby (85-78 – 163) finished in a four-way tie for ninth place. Maggie Peters (85-83 – 168) finished in 18th place, while Jaymie Pentony (90-84 – 174) took 22nd place. Ali Brandt (99-85 – 184) was 29th.
Shiyang Fan of Whitman claimed medalist honors with a final score of 76-75 – 151 (-7), leading the Blues to an upset of George Fox and a share of the NWC title.
Whitman shot 301 on Sunday to overtake GFU in the standings 622-626. The Blues earn the league's automatic bid to the NCAA tournament based on the head-to-head win at this tournament.
Sunday's scores were reflective of calmer conditions at the Walla Walla golf course on Sunday.
The final team scores were Whitman 622, George Fox 626, Whitworth 668, Lewis & Clark 675, Pacific Lutheran 690, Pacific (Ore.) 729, Puget Sound 734.
