LA VERNE, Calif. – A two-run home run and clutch run batted in from Kinsey McNaught gave the Whitworth Pirates a doubleheader with the La Verne Leopards on Saturday afternoon.
The Pirates moved to 2-2 on the season after a pair of splits against the Leopards and Chapman. La Verne is now 1-2 on the year.
Game 1: La Verne 1, Whitworth 0
A solo home run from Carly Condon and shutout from Elisa Ponce handed Whitworth its second loss of the season in game one.
Condon's fifth-inning blast to center field was the lone blemish for Ashley Trueblood, who was narrowly outdueled by Ponce.
Trueblood tossed six strong innings, giving up one run on four hits. She struck out one batter and didn't walk any. Ponce went seven innings. She gave up four hits, walked two batters, and struck out seven Pirates.
Whitworth had a opportunities to score in the third and seventh innings. The Bucs had runners on first and second with one out in the third, but a fielder's choice and groundout allowed Ponce to escape the inning.
In the seventh, the Pirates had multiple opportunities to send the game to extra innings. Sara Gayer singled through the right side to lead off the inning and her pinch-runner, Kaylie Lowery, advanced to second on a pick-off error. The Bucs couldn't take advantage as a flyout, strikeout, and foul out ended the game.
Game 2: Whitworth 4, La Verne 3
Whitworth took advantage of Leopard errors in the eighth inning to secure an extra inning win in the nightcap.
With Madelyn Carlson placed on second base to begin the inning, Kinsey McNaught reached on a throwing error, scoring Carlson. After Logan Miller walked, Natalie Edlin drove in McNaught with a sacrifice fly to right field, which gave Whitworth the insurance run they needed to secure a victory.
The clutch RBI was McNaught's third of the game. With Lowery on first after a fielder's choice in the third inning, McNaught homered down the left field line, giving the Bucs a 2-1 at the time. La Verne tied the game in the fourth on a single from Shelby Tevis, giving the teams the 2-2 deadlock that carried into extra innings.
Carlson earned the win with a complete game. She tossed eight innings, allowing 7 hits and 3 runs (2 earned). Katheryn Navarro took the loss for La Verne.
McNaught finished 2-3 with 3 RBIs for the Bucs. Chelsey Hayes and Allie Rude also picked up a pair of hits, going 2-4 and 2-3, respectively. Melissa Garcia went 2-3 with a home run for the Leopards. Garcia, Tevis, and Angelica DeAngelo all drove in runs.
Up next, the Pirates finish their California road trip with a visit to Occidental. The first game of the doubleheader begins at 11am and the second is scheduled to start at 1pm.
