Whitworth Men Win Again at PLU

PARKLAND, Wash. – Whitworth University won at Pacific Lutheran University in men's tennis for the second time in as many days, this time by a 7-2 score on Saturday afternoon.

The Pirates, who won 6-3 on Friday, improved to 4-11 overall and 4-6 in the Northwest Conference.  The Lutes dropped to 3-12, 3-8.

Whitworth did not sweep the doubles matches on Saturday like the Bucs did on Sunday.  PLU got a point when Ryan Adams and Niko Convento edged Shane Sandlin and Caleb Hughes 8-6 at #1 doubles.  Whitworth's Ian Fisher and Jeffrey Vulis pulled out an 8-5 win over James Okubo and Justin DeMattos at #2.  That came after brothers Jake and Ben Bethards teamed to sweep Chan Thourk and Keith Petitt 8-0 at #3.

Unlike Friday, when the teams split the six singles contests, the Pirates won five of the matches on Saturday.  Fisher won in straight sets at #3, while Jake Bethards did the same at #4.  Vulis earned a 6-4, 6-1 win at #5 singles and Nick Hughes rolled 6-2, 6-2 at #6 singles.

Sandlin pulled out the only singles match that went more than two sets when he came from behind to defeat Convento 5-7, 6-1, 6-3 at #2 singles.  Adams earned PLU's only singles point with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Caleb Hughes at #1 singles.

Whitworth will complete its three-match trip to Tacoma by playing at Puget Sound on Sunday at 10:00 am.
